It’s Been a While

It has been a while since we’ve updated our page here. We don’t usually like that. Though this is a website and not a bog, it was set up to be interactive and to allow us to stay close to our readers, writers and artists. Since we haven’t done much here, in full view of the public so-to-speak, you should know what we’;ve been doing behind closed doors.

[Oh yeah, lets get it on!]

Niles, the next book in our queue has been rewritten. Not because of editing problems or content issues, but because the author, D. VonThaer, deemed it so. So, we’ve ben waiting. And waiting. And editing. And creating.

And…

Preparing other stories to share later this year. We’re working with the uber-talented Miss Belle Keat, author of the much-anticipated McKendrick Manor series. This series has been in the works for nearly a decade, and i can assure you each and every stone has been violated.

We’re also excited about a new Anthology we’re launching this summer. Submission calls will go out when ready/if necessary. We’re lucky and blessed to be in league with some amazing writers, musicians, and other artists who may fill all the gaps we need for this Anthology. But hold tight, we may need some more. We’ll let you know in the coming weeks.

Happy Holidays!

No matter who you are in this world, or where in the world you hang your hat, we at B.A.S.E.D. Press would like you to take time this month and reflect on your life. We hope that with that reflection there is love, happiness and generous portions of joy. We also hope you take the time to see one another, connect face to face or with a phone call to those you love and care for. Forego the texting and e-mail and Facebooking for a moment and call someone up to say, “Hey! I was thinking of you today!”

There are hoards of people we are thinking of right now. Some are far away, others just in the next room. We wish each and every soul peace and fulfillment.

Blessings to all.

Sprinting Can Be Good

The thing about a long race is, well, it’s long. It takes time, it takes stamina, and most of all it takes patience. After steady output of work and creativity, here comes the last few laps. This is when everything needs to be kicked into high gear. This is what’s happening over here at B.A.S.E.D. Press. The writing has been going on. That’s what happens behind the scenes.

The writers go and they create. They pull stories out of the deep recesses of their minds and slap it down. They tinker, they tool around. Eventually they come across our desk. Usually, we’re engaged. Sometimes, we’re blown away. Then there’s everything else. Editing. Editing is always a difficult task. In the immortal words of Bob Seger; deadlines and commitments, what to leave in, what to leave out?

Time is ticking away on this one, and one of the things about running on deadline is the rush. The burst of energy that runs a course through your veins when you’re nearing the finish line is like a drug. And right now, we’re all hopped up on it.

Diving Right In

Okay, folks. here’s the long and short of it. We’re on Twitter causing a ruckus, we’re on Facebook talking to ourselves and we are on the prowl for stories, for readers, and bloggers. We have some promo happening over at the good folks at Alternative-Read.com. We’re going to have some contests soon, where you could win a signed copy of Tuatha and more prizes. We’re partnering with other bloggers and publishers to bring you the latest scoop on the hottest indie writers around.

As you know, we love the indie world. Independent films, books, music, we heart you all. There is something to be said for someone creating exactly what they want and how they want it, and then sending it out into the world. We adore the unknown.

However, we don’t want anyone to remain unknown forever. Please take the time to meet some of our affiliates. We have personal relationships with photographers, like Loveland Photography in Kentucky and Kristen Werden Photography in Ohio, musicians and composers like Paul Flowers, and promoting superheros like Sassy Brit and her crew at Alternative-Read.

We’d love to share banners with you. We’d love to share reviews. We’d love to help you create great videos and cover art. Come back soon for book reviews, author interviews, and other things happening around the web. Help us help you. Read. Write. Create. Most of all, enjoy every second of it.

Change. It’s a Good Thing.

Change, for some, can be daunting. They like what they like and exactly the way they like it. They don’t like to deviate from plans and they certainly do not like having to compromise. Sometimes, change is necessary. After all, doing the same thing expecting a different result is the definition of insanity. (And we’re not certifiable just yet!)

This weekend we are working on a book video for the upcoming horror novel, Niles. Niles was written during NaNoWriMo, unlike D’s other work. It was rushed, unplanned comoketeky written from thought to thought to page. There’s something thrilling in that, and of course, daunting. The editing has been brutal. Many pages needed to be re-written. Even the tense was changed.

Sounds like too much work? Never. This is what we do, writers. Or, I think we should do more often. Instead of thinking outside the box, just rip it apart. Step outside of your comfort zone. Get uncomfortable. You may just be amazed at what you come up with.

This weekend we are filming the book video for Niles. It’s still very early; we don’t even have cover art yet. However, we’re trying to get a jump on things while the weather is cooperative as we are using real film for this one. No still life for this horror story! A scene from the book is being reenacted and set to original music scored by drum-n-bass and junglist composer, Paul Flowers.

Wish us luck. We’re about to get uncomfortable. But I’m willing to bet it’ll be worth it.

National Novel Writing Month

Otherwise known as NaNoWriMo, November calls to us, begging for our stories to find their way from our minds to the page. NaNo is special because it breaks the rules from the traditional way many writers create their stories. It’s not about quality here, it’s about quantity, so they say. The point is, if you can get 50,000 words written, a novella, you can finish your novel. If you invest enough of yourself to get 50,000 words written, you can go the long haul and actually finish a book.

Fifty-thousand words may seem like a lot to do in thirty days. It is! However, if you break it down, and go day-by-day it is much easier to handle. 1667 words per day. That is 11,669 words per week. Day-by-day you can break it down, throw yourself into the story and maybe, just maybe, create something fast, fun, interesting, and all together you.

The upcoming novel, Niles, was written by D. VonThaer during 2009′s NaNo competition. At the end, Niles was 53,000 words. Now, it’s 84,000  and in editing and cover design. Soon it will be on shelves, and hopefully in your hands.

We here at B.A.S.E.D. believe you can do this. It is definitely a challenge, it’s not easy. If it were easy, everyone would have written a novel. But, if you have a story you’ve been dying to write, this may be just the thing for you. There is a huge amount of support from the NaNo community, and from us here at B.A.S.E.D. Press.

Happy writing!

Season of the Glitch

[Update: Barnes & Noble now has the correct version of Tuatha and the Seven Sisters Moon on it's site and in stores. It is the paperback version, not the Salem Limited Edition.]

Oh fall. We love fall and it’s colors and crisp weather and haunting evenings. What we don’t love so much is the propensity for glitches instead of our coveted witches.

Two years ago we came up with a promotion for Tuatha and the Seven Sisters Moon. We created a Limited Salem Edition with a secret chapter. The LSE was bound in cloth and even had it’s own special cover created from photos in D. VonThaer’s personal collection. We only printed 100 copies, never to be sold in stores, never to be recreated, and the secret chapter holds the fate of a beloved character who shows up where he is least expected in all of D’s stories. The book was released on Halloween, fitting for it’s content and title.

And there were nothing but problems. The first batch were printed on paper, not cloth. The second batch was missing the secret chapter. The third batch came from a different printer and was missing page numbers and margins. Finally, all the proof issues were solved. Finally, all the pre-orders were able to be filed, shipped, read, and hopefully loved. Until they were stolen.

Two years later, we’ve received word that these books have shown up on e-bay, Amazon, and most recently Barnes N Noble. These books were printed yet again and shipped to the incredible people who cared enough to be so patient and wait for them. We can only hope they love them. However, that stolen batch is still out there. Please do not purchase those books from any online source other than here. You can even get them directly from the author. Each book is numbered, personalized, and signed.

A tremendous amount of effort, money, time and love went into producing that edition of Tuatha. We may never recover the effort, the time, nor the tears shed. What we can regain is the knowledge that a select few will not benefit from selling these books. We do not guarantee the authenticity or the quality of the books sold through other outlets. We can only guarantee the books sold through this website and the author herself as authentic work. There are only 100.

Thank you for your support. Thank you for your patience. And, thank you for loving the characters as much as we do.

To-Do List

To-Do List, OH! To-Do list.

Why art thou so long?

One carving of completion and two more fill thy place!

The lines across things done compare not to those etched upon mine face!

You are so full,

And I, so empty.

The more you grow, and duties thou make,

The weaker I become in your busied wake!
